An Alien Civilization
Written by: James Zhu
An Alien Civilization
I wasn’t alone.
A figure approached. It was distinctly alien, yet before I could activate my translator, a voice bloomed directly inside my mind—clear, resonant, and perfectly understood.
I stumbled backward, my hands flying to my helmet.
“You… I can hear you. How?”
The alien’s features did not move, but its mental voice carried a gentle, melancholy amusement.
“We possess no secrets from one another, traveler. My mind is open to yours, and yours is an open book to mine.”
It was awe-inspiring.
But as I looked past the creature’s shoulder, I caught sight of heavily armored enforcers patrolling the perimeter. It was a jarring image for what appeared to be a telepathic utopia.
“If your people hold no secrets,” I asked, my skepticism taking over, “then there can be no deception. No hidden crimes. Why do you still need a military? Why the police?”
The alien’s mental tone darkened, shifting from warmth to the heavy sorrow of a tragedy two centuries old.
“Because unity was born from a curse, and power is a disease that even an open mind cannot cure. Our civilization developed across two vastly different worlds.”
Images flooded my consciousness, projected directly from the alien’s memories.
I saw the Hive—a massive, barren world rich in rare metals but suffocated by industry.
Then I saw the Garden—a smaller, pristine planet blessed with mild weather, abundant water, and endless natural beauty.
Centuries ago, when interstellar travel became commonplace, the wealthy elite abandoned the overcrowded Hive and claimed the Garden for themselves. To sustain their luxurious lives, they relocated millions of the poor to the Garden, imprisoning them in vast, heavily guarded plantations as serfs. Their sole purpose was to breed, farm, and ship food back to the billions who remained on the Hive.
Those left behind on the Hive became miners and factory workers, forced to mimic the repetitive movements of machines. The wealthy had discovered that human labor was cheaper than advanced automation. Their precious resources were reserved for building terrifying combat robots to keep the workers obedient.
For two centuries, the Hive suffocated beneath smoke and darkness while the Garden drowned in luxury and decadence.
“But the rich are never entirely united,” the alien continued. “Two hundred years later, a group of black sheep emerged—the scientists responsible for supervising the food transports.”
Moved by compassion, these scientists secretly began overloading the supply ships.
Before then, the Hive workers had received barely enough food to survive, forcing them into desperate violence against one another.
With the additional supplies, the infighting gradually disappeared.
Hidden inside the grain sacks were handwritten messages.
Stand together. Do not rebel yet. The time has not come. We are helping you.
The workers obeyed.
Sustained by food and united by hope, something extraordinary happened.
Generations of absolute trust and shared suffering awakened a latent evolutionary ability.
Telepathy.
The people of the Hive became one vast collective consciousness.
Finally, the night arrived when the food ships failed to appear.
Instead, a hundred warships descended upon the Hive.
Across their hulls were written the words:
THE REVOLUTION BEGINS
The young men of the Hive embraced their families, boarded the ships, and seized control of the combat robots, whose systems the scientists had secretly infiltrated.
Together they traveled to the Garden to claim their freedom.
The elite were caught completely unprepared.
Believing they had built a perfect paradise upon the suffering of the Hive, they had stationed no military forces on the Garden.
The revolutionaries swept through the seaside villas with remarkable ease.
They killed only those who resisted.
The rest were captured alive.
They were a people raised through unity, compassion, and sacrifice.
They did not seek revenge.
They sought justice.
They intended to bring the ruling elite back to the Hive to stand trial.
But they had underestimated the scientists.
The moment the prisoners were secured, the scientists reactivated the combat robots.
The machines turned upon the revolutionaries.
The beautiful seaside paradise became a slaughterhouse.
The scientists had never desired equality.
They wanted the throne.
When the automated warships finally returned to the Hive, they were stained with the blood of its people.
The collective consciousness felt every death instantly.
Yet the scientists had underestimated one thing.
Unity.
The people of the Hive fought side by side without fear.
When one fell, another stepped forward.
Driven by a single shared purpose, they destroyed every combat robot and secured complete control of the Hive.
But victory came at an unbearable cost.
“Now,” the alien said, its psychic presence heavy with grief, “we are trapped in a mirror image of our past.”
“On the Garden, the scientists crowned themselves kings. They elevated the former serfs into barons and reduced the old aristocracy to slavery. The cycle did not end.”
“It merely reversed.”
“Today, the Hive is starving. Its population continues to decline because it lacks natural resources.”
“Meanwhile, the slave population on the Garden continues to grow.”
“The scientist-kings regularly send raiding parties to the Hive to steal its remaining metals.”
“To them, these are merely border skirmishes.”
“But lives are shattered so easily.”
“We develop our technology in secret, hoping that one day we can finally break the cycle.”
A spark of recognition stirred within me.
I looked at the alien, my heart suddenly racing.
“I am a scientist too,” I said.
“I come from a planet called Earth.”
“The structural engineering of my transport… the data stored within my pod… I can share it with you.”
“Perhaps together…”
“We can end this.”
For the first time, genuine joy radiated through the alien’s psychic presence.
The crushing sorrow inside my mind lifted.
Hope flooded the silence.
Then—
Crack.
The sharp report of a high-caliber rifle shattered the twilight.
The joy vanished instantly.
The alien collapsed into the gray dust, its eyes wide and lifeless.
Behind it, another enforcer fell, its armor pierced clean through.
A harsh voice shouted from the distant ridge, swallowed by the mechanical roar of descending dropships.
The fragile peace had ended.
Another skirmish had begun.
